November 10th, 2009 Patience Is More Than A Virtue, It’s One Of The Fruits Of The Holy Spirit
Being impatient has taken a heavy toll on the human race, because of impatience kingdoms have fallen; nations have gone to war, and thousand upon thousand of fatalities have occurred on our highways. That is why the author of the book of Proverbs could say, “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense” (Proverbs 19:11).
Whether you’re sitting at a conference table as a cabinet member of a powerful nation, or a cement finisher heading down the freeway late for work; it would be wise to heed the advice of King Solomon, the proverbs author, that tells us to get wisdom, which in turn; will stress the importance of cultivating a patient and humble spirit.
Today, more so than any other time in history, your chances of becoming a victim of “road rage” is extremely high, and what’s worse; your chances of being an executor of road rage is almost as high. We are living in very stressful times that are producing stressed-out individuals that are at the brink of destruction. All around us we see the fruits of stressful living: anxiety, depression, discontent, emotional instability, and even paranoid schizophrenia. Even in small school age children you see unsettling cases of emotional and psychological stress that day to day living has brought on.
We need to understand that there is a real solution to living in a world that is fast pace and unforgiving. The apostle Paul taught us that,”the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (patience); against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22,23). Choosing to exercise the fruits of the Spirit will not only bring about inner peace in our life, but it could very well save our life too—both physically and spiritually. With so many people walking around; driving around, filled with frustration and anger; it’s imperative that as Christians we stay calm and unprovoked to avoid escalating an already dangerous situation.
The apostle Paul went on to say, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleaness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, envying, murders, drunkeness, revelling, and such like: of which I tell you before, as I have also told you in the past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).
As “Born Again” Christians we must not allow the fruits of the flesh to be manifested in our character or practice. We should strive to fight against those tendencies to exhibit the fruits of the flesh; instead the apostle Paul said that if we live in the Spirit, we should also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). Although we were conceived in sin, thereby inheriting sin; through the Holy Spirit we still can wage a successful battle against sin in our daily living. No man is perfect and no man is without sin, but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can triumph over willful sinning by being obedient to the directions and instructions of the Holy Spirit.
Christians that show intolerance and impatience are not following Jesus Christ; in fact, they are following the prince of darkness—Satan the devil. When we forsake the right way to follow the wrong way we submit ourselves at the throne of darkness. Our conduct as Christians must exemplify Christ Jesus, and we cannot allow room for wickedness to take seed and grow. Jesus said, “If you love me keep my commandments” (John14:15). Jesus taught us to love one another, but He also taught us to love our enemies, and pray for those who despitefully use us. Therefore, not only must we show tolerance and patience, but we must also show love. Jesus said “Honor thy father and mother: and ‘Thy shall love thy neighbor as thyself’ “(Matthew 19:19).
If we are really Christians; if we truly belong to Christ, we must follow His commandments and cease not to follow them. There are many who call themselves Christians, but their works are the works of darkness: anger, strife, murders, lies, witchcraft, hatred; yet they confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their lord and saviour. Well, we all know that actions speak louder than words, and it’s easy to identify a tree by the fruit it bears.
Christians must pray always without fail, our fight is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, wickedness in high places, according to the apostle Paul (Ephesians 6:12), and the only way we can successfully fight this fight is through our lord and saviour Jesus Christ, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We are no match for Satanic forces unless we are imbued with the power from on high—the Holy Spirit. Through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit the powers of darkness are no match for us! Apostle Paul so eloquently stated, “I can do all things through Christ who strengeneth me” (Philippians 4:13), and that does not exclude Satan and his demons.
After repenting of all our sins and confessing with our mouth that Jesus Christ, the Son of God was raised from the dead, and we believed it in our heart; we were saved. And through prayer and faith in the word of God we received the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised He would send after His departure (Luke 24:49).Now, those of us who have received this gracious gift from Jehovah God, our heavenly Father, through His Son Jesus Christ; we must bring forth the fruits of the Spirit. We must not conduct ourselves as if we do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and live a life that is contrary to the will of God.
That is why we were admonished by the apostle Peter to make sure of our calling and election (2Peter 1:9). We can’t afford to live a life that is displeasing to the author of our salvation—Jesus Christ. We must pick up our cross and follow Jesus even though it will mean persecution and rejection by many. Our walk must be such that it bring honor and glory to our heavenly Father and our saviour Jesus Christ. In order to do this we must rid ourselves of pride because it is the pride of life that manifest itself in all manner of wickedness (Proverbs 16:18).
In order to be a Christian, you must follow Christ; there is no other way. You might attend church regularly; you might be one that is held in high esteem by other church members for the good works that you do and have done; you might even have given your body to be burned, to show your love for Christ, but Jesus said, “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not may sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father (Jehovah God) which sent me (John 14:23,24).
In conclusion, as Christians we have been given the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to guide us, and instruct us on how to live holy lives. If we avail ourselves of this precious gift that God Almighty has given to all Christians through Jesus Christ, we can and will bring forth good works that will result in the edification, glorification, exaltation, and the vindication of our great and wonderful God Jehovah, and our dear saviour, and the prince of light—Jesus Christ.
May the one true God of heaven and earth—the great Jehovah God, and His life giving Son, Jesus Christ be with you until we meet again. Amen and amen.
